Exam, yeah. I´m in the midst of it. I´m writing thirteen pages about two articles written by two norwegian art critics. I´ve delved deep into Platon´s ideas about the ideal state, and what place he intended art to have in it. He seems to be very suspicious about letting in the Muses. I wonder how he would´ve looked upon comics? Maybe as we look on tagging and grafitti on the walls today. Emotional junk. Platon saw public emotions and art as dangerous.
Strange thing, his own works are beautiful things of art. The dialogue "Ion", for instance. He must have meant a particular art, then? Well, this old wise man, Platon, had an enemy. Another old wise man. I can´t wait to read the dialogue he wrote about him, I look forward to find some exciting philosophical cat-calling in it. Ever heard about Gorgias? He´s the villain. Gorgias was a master rhetoric. it means he could persuade people to believe anything. That they really didn´t exist, for instance.
What has this to do with the norwegian art critics?
Well, they are walking in the fringe of unknown territory when it comes to art critic. One is doing a performance article in public, or is it a joke, a hoax? the other is breaking down sentences and writing stray thoughts, a puzzle for the readers to put together, if they want an impression of the whole artwork. I find both writers courageous. I got a feeling that the academic world has its own laws and lands, and the schools will defend their borders. Platons ideal state? Will Gorgias be let in? Philosophy and rhetoric, truth and art, together in peace. They both need each other.
